Stephen J. Zabilski, Nominator
“I joined the Society of St Vincent de Paul to help others but now I realize the profound impact that those others have made on me.”
Stephen Jenkins has been a humble force in preventing homelessness for more than 20 years in Arizona. Since 1986, he has worked hand in hand with the poor while rising up in the governing ranks of the non-profit Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Though serving a second term as President of the Board, Stephen and his wife still make weekly visits to poor families to provide food, rent, utility assistance and mentoring. As a long time board member who has served on dozens of committees and projects, he has helped shape the direction of the Society. Along the way, he has worked to build dining rooms and medical and dental clinics, improve social services, grow programs in other communities, and provide more efficient and effective services to the poor. After ten years of collaboration with its partners, St. Vincent de Paul recently celebrated the opening of the Human Services Campus. As President of the Campus Board of Directors, Stephen has played a large role in developing the new service center with state-of-the-art facilities that usher in a new era for delivery of services to the homeless and poor.
