George Hanney

George Hanney is a barrier breaker. In 1986, with an uninformed community in fear over individuals infected with HIV/AIDS, he showed how one person could make a positive difference in the lives of many. He didn’t turn his back then nor does he now. He believes that communication and education are the best weapons in breaking down the social stigma of this disease. The Phoenix Shanti Group provides housing, education and direct client services, including an array of outpatient services, to individuals, families and loved ones infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Shanti celebrates George’s 18 years of consistent 50-hour volunteer “work” weeks, including serving as Chairman of the Board for the last decade. He transformed the organization. More importantly, he transformed how the community views this disease.
