“We feel it’s what we should be doing as long as we are able, and we are happiest when we are volunteering and working together to lighten someone else’s load.”
When Ann and Bill decided to do something to help others, especially children and the elderly, they started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Wisconsin. In 1996, they moved to Arizona and discovered Save the Family Foundation of Arizona (STF). First they donated $5,000 to STF to start a “no interest” loan program for needy families with children. Soon, they were enlisted to set up and manage a thrift store, acquiring racks, display cases, and other supplies and even writing an Operations Manual. Today, they are in charge of recruiting and training volunteers, stocking the store and even moving furniture. For the past nine years, they have devoted much of their lives to making the thrift store a success. The Schweers have donated over 33,000 volunteer hours working at the store, which has now surpassed $1 million dollars in gross sales. The money raised helps fund the programs of Save the Family Foundation, which provides transitional housing and support services to homeless families with children.
