Ladies Auxiliary VFW – Veterans & Family Support Program
A day for Kim Sloan can begin at an aircraft hangar where troops are getting ready to be deployed. She would be the one in the middle of the confusion and sad farewells, giving directions, answering questions, solving problems and making sure the soldiers can spend every precious moment left with those they love.
Then she will remove her volunteer hat and continue on to her full time job, putting it on again at the end the day with a committee meeting for the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. Once the soldiers have shipped out, Sloan channels her energy towards those left behind. She raises funds, and creates events to make life a little easier. There are blood drives, Thanksgiving turkey drives and Christmas stockings to fill and deliver. Then there is Operation Backpack for school-aged children, Operation Message where families of deployed soldiers create videos and messages to send to lonely soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and the list goes on and on.
She has won the Gil LaMontagne Award for Excellent Service which recognizes the dedication and service of a member of the VFW or Ladies Auxiliary to aid veterans and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW National Outstanding Community Volunteer Award.
According to Sloan, her biggest challenge is trying to find enough time in every day to do all the things she wants to do. Everyone has something they can offer and if I can help military families then I am going to do whatever I can do.
